Imagine a college where more than half of the teaching space is specialized labs, where students get hands-on experience with what they are learning. Now imagine that faculty and students work side-by-side in these labs, allowing students to gain real experience in the use of the most advanced technologies. While you’re at it, imagine that this college trains people for the high-tech employment world of tomorrow in the most in-demand areas in art and design, architecture, business, computer systems, engineering technologies, entertainment, health care (including nursing, radiologic technology, dental hygiene, restorative dentistry and vision care), hospitality and culinary arts, human services, the law-related professions, career and technology teacher education, and the liberal arts and sciences.
You don’t have to just imagine it! We’re New York City College of Technology, the college of technology of the City University of New York. Most people know us as City Tech. We enroll almost 14,000 students in 57 baccalaureate and associate degree programs, and serve another 15,000 students annually through our Division of Continuing Education and External Partnerships. City Tech programs are designed to anticipate changing employment trends in the city, state, and nation, not just to follow them.
City Tech’s outstanding faculty — many recruited from business, industry and the professions and most holding the highest degree in their fields – can provide you with the benefit of their extensive knowledge and real-world experience. More than half of the College’s full time faculty was hired during the past five years and bring fresh ideas and innovative technologies into the classroom and the lab. City Tech faculty create interactive robots that walk the floors of local museums, work to transform the Brooklyn waterfront and to improve air and water quality, and write computer programs that can simulate the music of a full orchestra. They change our world every day.
Students and faculty come from more than 100 countries and speak more than 60 languages. For four of the last five years City Tech ranked first in the diversity of the students it serves among all Comprehensive Colleges/Bachelor’s (North) in the annual survey by U.S. News & World Report. The College also ranks at or near the top of all colleges in the nation in the number of African-American, Asian-American and Hispanic students enrolled in associate degree programs in the engineering technologies. We’re not just in New York. We are New York!
Professional academic advisors will make sure you get the right start. Incoming freshmen can be programmed to take two or more classes together, to make sure there are faces you recognize and people who recognize you. Pre-freshman tuition-free summer classes help you get ready. You won’t ever be just a number. We will help you to succeed, and to feel at home from the first day.
At the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, City Tech is adjacent to the MetroTech Center, the development at the heart of the exciting new Downtown Brooklyn. City Tech sits at one of the City’s major transportation hubs, and can be reached by the A, B, C, D, F, G, M, N, R, 2, 3, 4, and 5 subway lines, and by any of the buses that go to Downtown Brooklyn. Can you get to City Tech? Unless you live on Mars!
The impact of City Tech extends far beyond Downtown Brooklyn. You can add to your education through research assistantships and related opportunities at prestigious national laboratories. There are internship and service learning opportunities across the curriculum, in addition to an international student exchange program with the technological college of the University of Paris and other study abroad options. Our Placement Office provides extensive job placement opportunities for both current students and those about to graduate. Voluntary community assistance projects let you apply your knowledge, test your skills and put what you have learned in the classroom to good use in the service of others while still in school.
City Tech has produced 80,000 graduates. Most have remained in the metropolitan New York area and continue to contribute to its economic and professional vitality, including more than 1,000 who are or have been CEOs or owners of their own businesses. The list of corporations that have hired our graduates in recent years looks very much like the annual Fortune 500. Graduates succeed in a wide range of fields, like Michael Lomonaco, executive chef of Porter House New York and radio/TV celebrity chef; Mildred Garcia, president of California State University, Dominguez Hills; Carl Cosenzo, chief operating officer of Schiavone Construction Company; Annie Christopher, founder and president of Annie’s Naturals; Kin Wah Lam, director of technology at Time, Inc; or Erroll Pierre, director of planning at Saks, Inc. These are just a handful of our thousands of success stories.
The percentage of graduates passing licensing exams in the health-related professions is substantially higher than the statewide average, and almost half of all New York State minority engineering technicians are City Tech alumni. Nationally, the figure is nearly one in five. Boulders in your way? We’ll help you to move them.
You might be thinking that you can’t afford a college that offers everything you will find at City Tech. Wrong! Students at City Tech benefit from CUNY’s affordable tuition. Even more, about 85% of the entering students qualify for financial aid. City Tech works hard to ensure that students succeed, and that we provide a world-class education at an affordable price.
Don’t imagine, though, that you can succeed at City Tech without hard work. Like the other good things in life, success at City Tech needs to be earned. But we will be there every step of the way, ready to help through learning labs, tutoring, classes to develop learning skills, mentoring programs, and faculty willing to go the extra mile to make sure you succeed.
Imagine an exciting career in a rapidly changing world. Imagine having an education that prepares you for a lifetime of constant learning. Imagine feeling that you have achieved to your full potential, in a supportive, caring learning community. Imagine tomorrow. Live it today at City Tech.
