Fifty years after its founding, Stony Brook has earned a place among the top 1 percent of all the world's Universities, according to the London Times Higher Education Supplement. We offer more than 150 majors, minors, and combined-degree programs for undergraduates, an active research environment, Long Island’s only university-based teaching hospital, and innovative programs that prepare students for graduate study and a host of careers. We also now have an exciting new major in journalism.
As graduates of an institution that is a member of the elite Association of American Universities, students earn a degree that is highly valued and recognized. Stony Brook’s six themed undergraduate colleges offer students personalized advising, close faculty connections, and first-year seminars with only 20 students per class. Both residents and commuters belong to the undergraduate colleges, which provide a rich schedule of activities both on and off campus. Student clubs and academic advising support students heading toward careers in law, engineering, medicine, and a range of health professions. Our world-class undergraduate research program offers guidance toward research placements in all of these areas and more. Each spring the University pays tribute to students' accomplishments in all the arts and sciences with a day of exhibition and performance.
